Matilda by Roald Dahl

Matilda by Roald Dahl. (1988) Illustrations by Quentin Blake. Puffin Books, 240 pg.

Matilda is a misunderstood genius living in a home where she is taken for granted. When she was three, she could read newspapers and she spoke perfect grammar. Finally she convinced her parents to allow her to go to school. She meets Miss Honey whose goodness and love are overshadowed by Miss Trunchbull, the headmistress. Matilda is threatened with time spend in the Chokey. Miss Trunchbull isn't above swinging children by their pigtails or force feeding them chocolate cake (the best scene in the book!). Matilda discovers new found mental powers and gets rid of The Trunchbull and her parents.

genre: fiction, humor

interest: ages 7-13

similar: any books where the students ban together and overthrow the school administration, this is also a great movie

personal thoughts: We had to include a Roald Dahl book, they are all classics and have a deep rich dark humor to them. This book stood out to me because of the laugh out loud scenes like Bruce Bogtrotter and the chocolate cake.

ideas: fun fiction recommendation especially for reluctant readers, the illustrations and story pull you right in
