Ramona Quimby, Age 8. Written by Beverly Cleary. Harper Trophy, 1981. ISBN 0-380-70956-2. 179 pages. $5.99Brief Plot Description:
Ramona Quimby has a lot of responsibilities for an eight year old. She has the job of being nice to Willa Jean, the granddaughter of her babysitter, she rides the bus by herself to school, and she’s trying hard not to be a nuisance to her third grade teacher Mrs. Whaley. She knows it’s important to do her part because things are stressful enough in the Quimby household since her father went back to school so he can get a job that doesn’t make him grouchy. Ramona keeps us entertained from beginning to end with her musical shoes, getting egg in her hair at school, and a not so disastrous turn at cooking dinner...
Interest Level:
8 to 12 year olds and would interest boys and girls alike.
Similar Books:
Ramona the Brave, Beezus and Ramona, Ramona and her Father, Ramona and her Mother
Personal Thoughts:
Ramona goes through many experiences throughout the novel that kids her age face every day. She is concerned about her parents’ relationship, she deals with starting a new school without her older sister Beezus who has graduated to junior high school, and she worries about whether or not her teacher and her peers like her. As I was rereading it, two different people approached me and told me how much they loved Beverly Cleary's books as a kid.
Reason for the Selection:
Beverly Cleary is a necessary component for humor in young adult literature. So many people have read her books. It seems that every time I had this book out in view when I was working on this project someone would approach me and comment on how much they liked her books as a kid.
